About The Monkey

David Love was born in Geneva, NY on June 26th, 1974. His first interest in Music came in 1980 after seeing Kermit the Frog singing "The Rainbow Connection" in The Muppet Movie. He decided he had to play Guitar. The Fact that Kermit was playing Banjo was not lost on him, but even at the age of six, he knew that Guitar was way cooler than Banjo. So after harassing his parents for about a year, he got a guitar and started lessons. They were briefly interrupted when the family moved from Geneva to Ithaca, NY, but soon started again. At the age of 10, David quit Guitar to pursue his dream of Playing for the New York Mets, but restarted at 12 when his older brother (and current webmaster) started playing and asked David for help. That summer of 1986 was important for two reasons: One, the Mets won the world series, and David got his first Electric guitar, a gift from his parents during a nasty bout of Mononucleosis. He started studying with local guitar genius Chris Woitach, and was playing his first professional gigs at 13 in a band known as "The Fab Three" a power trio without a whole lot of power. He also got a Tascam Portastudio and started recording.

As middle school gave way to High School, Music became more and more what he spent his time doing, being that the Mets thing wasn't really working out too well. He played in lots of bands, school and otherwise, and spent most Thursday evenings in a dive called Pete's Cayuga Bar, watching his teacher play in a jazz quartet. His Mom had to talk to the bar owner so they would let him in, being 7 years younger than the drinking age of 21. As he graduated High School, his senior projects included a full-length album of his own music, as well as writing and performing the music for a documentary about the alternative school attended.

After Graduation, David attended Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Unfortunately, it kind of sucked, so David transferred to the Ithaca College school of Music, a very well respected conservatory. He studied with well known Jazz Guitarist Steve Brown, and received training in Jazz improvisation, Jazz arranging, Music theory, Composition, Orchestration, and a whole lot of other cool stuff. He also led his own Jazz band that performed frequently on the local Jazz scene, first as Moment's Notice then as the David Love quartet or quintet, depending on who showed up for the gig. He also worked extensively in the Pizza Delivery arts. As senior year approached, he decided to start a rock band. So he called up old high school friends and band mates Pedro Arroyo and Alex Gottschalk to start Pet Rocks. With Steve Reichlen on drums, this band played to empty clubs all over the Upstate New York region. In 1997 they released their first album, recorded at Pyramid Sound in Ithaca. It was recorded by Alex Perialas (Anthrax, Bad Religion) and did very well locally, selling over 100 copies.

In 1999, David decided on a change of scenery, and along with his Partner Emily and their Cat Kyra, moved to Austin, Texas. In the spring of 2000, David rekindled his interest in recording with the purchase of a Boss BR-8 Digital 8 track. He quickly had friends asking him to help them produce Demos. After a few of them won awards, he decided to go into business, and the rest is history. Love Monkey Studios opened in September of 2002. David is not only active as a producer and engineer, but also as a guitarist, having performed and recorded all over Austin with the likes of Jenny Hollub, Adam Donmoyer, Nobody's Business, Eliza Wren, The Groovetones, Carolina, Jenny Mansfield, Philippe Vieux, Jill Louise King, Allison Thrash, and many others. He teaches private guitar lessons all over Austin and also works as a musical arranger.
